THE GREAT NORTHERN - full interior design/build
While a Senior Designer/ Project Manager at One Hat One Hand, I was the lead on a complete redesign transitioning a beloved local nightclub, Mighty, into it’s next life as The Great Northern, for Monarch Group. The client’s brief was ‘future art deco’ which, as a lifelong fan of the visual language, was an absolute joy to explore through the various features I came up with for the club. I concepted and engineered all the built interior elements of the club, leading a team of junior designers and fabrication crew through the engineering, surface detailing, build, and install. Some of those features include a VIP lounge, a 3D illustrated art feature wall built for projection mapping, lighted column caps, rounded art deco windows for ticketing and coat check, and trim details throughout the space. Some elements required extensive engineering; for example, the self-contained DJ booth has shocks and weight dampening for turntables, is able to supports dancers, up to 15 people partying behind the DJ, record crates, and can be rolled on casters. Other elements, like the Deco Egyptian inspired ‘Daylight Bar’ incorporate programmable tech to create the effect of tree branches moving in the breeze behind a faux stained glass window. A moody, velvet draped ‘Goth Bar’ and the bright, three story arch installation provide additional options for performance, bar service, and event needs. All elements needed to be able to withstand not only the general public, but that public in ‘nightclub mode’ and critically, hold up to a level where the space can be rented for higher end corporate events.
